The soundness of the science of sound.

  • Why are PA systems terrible?
Whether it is because I am getting old or not, I often have trouble
understanding spoken words. I notice that when I listen on radio or
television, some voices are easy to understand while others are
difficult to understand. Is there an acoustical explanation? That is, If
I can understand one person but not another, is my processing bad? Are

    Dear All:
As you recall we extensively discussed forming an physics-acoustics news

  • Bass absorption in auditoriums
    Hi
When designing an auditorium where sound will mostly be played through
the PA system, the sound designer asks the acoustician for a pretty
"dead" room, say Rev Times of 1sec. As always Mid and high Frequencies
are easily delat with. However bass frequencies are far harder to
absorb. Lets also think of a very good and expenssive PA system will

    Hi all,
Can anyone recommend sound file software that could take popular sound
file formats and allow export of numerical data to a spread sheet?
I've been using Cool Edit, one of the original, very good, free
packages that shows wave forms in real time and Fourier transforms in
frequency space, but it cannot export the numerical data, and I have

    Hi ,
I recently had a client propose building a double stud wall and
filling the cavity with sand in order to minimize sound transmission.
The application is for a small recording studio. Has anyone heard of
something like this before? If so, do you have any comments on the
feasibility or effectiveness as compared with other solutions?

I am doing my basement. I will be putting up drywall and partitioning.
I was thinking, is there anything out there to orderly put holes in the drywall
without causing too much greif. I would cover those areas with a material
of some sort. R-13 insulation will be in most of the walls and ceiling areas.

  • Helmholtz absorber size question
The type of bass traps I'm most familiar with are either large slabs
of fiberglass or foam (broadband), or large vibrating panels over a
sealed cavity that are tuned by varying the panel mass / thickness and
cavity depth. Those are easy to understand because sound waves strike
    a large surface area.
But I don't understand the absorbing mechanism for Helmholtz

  • Lightning inside cavitation bubble
    Hi Henry,
    Ran across this while surfing,
"When an ultrasonic wave passes through a liquid medium, containing
microscopic gas inclusion, it can produce cavitation. At the boundary of
a cavitating zone, a voltage appears as a effect of the collapse/rebound
    cycle of the cavitation bubbles."
The voltage causes a spark in the vapor of the bubble.

transformer and series inductor. But I also remember the fellow saying
