MRAD device

Back side of ATC's MRAD (Medium Range Acoustic Device), during a demo for military, law enforcement, and government tech experts from the US and abroad, at Edwards Air Force Base in Palmdale (Sep 1, 2005). The devices are capable of broadcasting sound at high volumes for 100-600 meters. The event was organized by the LA Sherriff's Department, which is considering using similar devices for civil unrest and disaster communications. LRADS will be used by the NYPD and Boston PD, as well as other law enforcement agencies; 60 are in use currently by the US Navy. A quantity of free devices are being shipped to Marine police detachments for use in gulf coast Katrina crisis zones.
