...and on top of the booster ring. There used to be a 184" diameter magnet in the center of this yoke. During World War II, this was the first Calutron, a huge mass spectrograph used to separate fissile U-235 from U-238. Although production-scale separation was done at Oak Ridge, the process and the equipment were developed and tested here.
