Mercury diffusion

Side view of a clear compact fluorescent lamp just after ignition. On the upper side of the lamp, the mercury vapor diffuses slowly from the amalgam tabs welded to the electrodes. The photo does not show clearly that most of the discharge is burning in pure argon in the lower part of the lamp.
